How an Electrophysiologist Can Help You

Conditions Treated by Electrophysiologists

An electrophysiologist is a specialist within a specialty–cardiology. An electrophysiologist treats a wide range of heart conditions, related to heart rhythm. Dr. Alireza Nazeri at Mobitz Heart & Rhythm Center in Houston, TX, is a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist who provides comprehensive cardiology treatments and services.

How an Electrophysiologist Can Help You

Let’s look at some of the conditions an electrophysiologist can diagnose and treat:

  • Atrial fibrillation–an irregular, rapid heart rhythm in the upper chambers of the heart
  • Bradycardia–a heartbeat which is too slow
  • Tachycardia–a heartbeat which is too fast
  • Ventricular tachycardia–a more serious type of rapid heartbeat
  • Ventricular fibrillation–fluttering of the heart muscle which doesn’t allow the heart to pump blood
  • Sudden cardiac arrest–occurring when the heart suddenly stops beating

Visiting an EP should be considered if you are experiencing:

  • A quivering heartbeat
  • Your heart skipping beats
  • Your heartbeat is thumping against the wall of your chest
  • Dizziness and light-headedness
  • Nausea associated with chest pain
  • Chronic weakness and fatigue
  • Chronic shortness of breath

To diagnose a heart rhythm problem, an EP may recommend:

  • An electrocardiogram, to evaluate heart rhythm and check for abnormal rhythm patterns
  • An echocardiogram, to assess if there are structural changes in your heart
  • A Holter monitor or event recorder, to evaluate heart activity
  • A cardiac stress test, to measure how well your heart functions during activity

After identifying the heart rhythm issue, your EP will develop a treatment plan to correct or manage heart rhythm and heart function. The treatment plan may include:

  • Medication therapy, to manage heartbeat speed and maintain a normal heart rate
  • Cardioversion therapy, to reset your heart rate to normal rate and rhythm
  • Cardiac ablation, to block abnormal heartbeats
