What Is Heart Failure?

Heart failure in might make you think of a heart attack, but what congestive heart failure actually means is that your heart isn't pumping blood as well as it should be, and it is a complication of other heart diseases. Heart failure means your blood isn't getting the oxygen it needs and this causes all kinds of side effects, notably fatigue, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, and a high heart rate.

People can and do live with heart failure. It can be managed with a combination of lifestyle changes and medications, and we can help find the best treatment methods for you.

What Causes Heart Failure?

Heart failure is a complication of other heart conditions that include cardiomyopathy, high blood pressure, heart valve disease, and congenital heart defects. If you have thyroid disease, are obese, or are a long-term alcohol abuser, these can also affect your heart. Heart failure is most commonly caused by physical damage from a heart attack or by coronary artery disease.

If you've had a heart attack it doesn't necessarily mean you have heart failure, but the heart is physically weakened and working harder to pump blood to your body. With coronary artery disease, the arteries are narrowed and it makes your heart have to work harder to pump blood efficiently. Your cardiologist can help control your symptoms but will likely recommend lifestyle changes like diet and exercise to help take care of your heart.
