What Is Atrial Fibrillation (Afib)?

How your cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist in Houston, TX, can help with atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, also known as Afib, is a type of irregular heartbeat with some unpleasant and scary signs and symptoms. Your cardiologist can help you manage atrial fibrillation, so you can continue to have an active life.

Dr. Alireza Nazeri at Mobitz Heart & Rhythm Center in Houston, TX, is a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist who provides a wide range of cardiology services, including diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation.

When you have atrial fibrillation, you may get a feeling that your heart is:

  • Quivering
  • Skipping beats
  • Thumping against the wall of your chest

You may also feel some generalized symptoms including:

  • Dizziness
  • Light-headed
  • Nauseous
  • Weak and tired
  • Short of breath

If you have Afib and it goes untreated, it can lead to:

  • Heart failure
  • Blood clots
  • A stroke

Treatment for Afib begins with a comprehensive physical examination, recording of your symptoms, and diagnostic testing.

Types of diagnostic testing include:

  • An echocardiogram, to check for structural changes in your heart
  • A Holter monitor or event recorder, to check heart activity
  • A cardiac stress test, to measure how your heart works when you are active

Once a diagnosis of Afib is established, there are several treatment options, including:

Medication therapy, to control the speed your heart beats and to reset your heartbeat to a normal rate. Common medications include blood thinners, antiarrhythmics, beta-blockers, and others.

Cardioversion therapy, uses electrical impulses to reset your heart rate

Cardiac ablation, uses hot or cold energy to cauterize tissue and block abnormal heartbeats
